Wild nights! ; and : Grandpa Clemens & Angelfish 1906 : two one act plays
A pair of plays adapted from a prose work that imagines that last days of classic American writers. In Wild Nights, the famously reclusive poetess Emily Dickinson appears as a life-like computerized mannequin brought home by a childless, affluent suburban couple in the hope that their disaffected lives will be "enhanced" by a poet-genius in their household. Soon, like generations of literary critics and biographers, the Krims find themselves obsessed by the wraithlike Emily. Grandpa Clemens and Angelfish 1905 traces a platonic love affair between the 70-year-old Sam Clemens/Mark Twain and a naïve 15-year-old schoolgirl who reminds him of his deceased daughter Suzy. In 1906 Clemens is a brilliant but dispirited public man in the twilight of his career--and susceptible to the charms of girls young enough to be his granddaughters, whom he invites to join an "exclusive" club in which Clemens is the only adult member. This play explores the poignancy of an elderly man's love for a young girl and the disaster that results when his love is reciprocated.--From publisher description.
