Glengarry Glen Ross

Times are tough at the real estate firm of Premiere Properties. Shelley "the machine" Levene (Lemmon) and Dave Moss (Harris) are veteran salesmen, but only Ricky Roma (Pacino) is on a hot streak. The new Glengarry sales leads could turn everything around, but the front office is holding them back until these "losers" prove themselves. Then someone decides to take matters into his own hands, stealing the Glengarry leads and leaving everyone wondering who did it.

  • "A powerful story of desperation and betrayal set in the world of real estate. Times are tough in a New York real-estate office; the salesmen (Shelley Levene, Ricky Roma, Dave Moss, and George Aaronow) are given a strong incentive by Blake to succeed in a sales contest. The prizes? First prize is a Cadillac Eldorado, second prize is a set of steak knives, third prize is the sack! There is no room for losers in this dramatically masculine world; only "closers" will get the good sales leads. There is a lot of pressure to succeed, so a robbery is committed which has unforeseen consequences for all the characters."@en

  • ""A group of real-estate salesmen-cum-con artists live on the edge ...""
  • "Brilliantly acted by a once-in-a-lifetime cast led by Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey and Alec Baldwin, this scorching drama was adapted by David Mamet from his own Pulitzer Prize-winning play. An ageing group of cut-throat New York real estate salesmen have gone from feast to famine in a market gone cold. When a domineering executive "motivator" (Baldwin) implements a do-or-die sales contest, the jaded sales team are forced to fight for their survival. Office superstar Pacino embraces the challenge, but a once-successful salesman (Lemmon) clings nervously to fading glory as the good leads dry up. In a cauldron of anxiety, tension and desperation, political and personal rivalries erupt. Pacino won an Oscar(R) nomination for his powerhouse performance, while Jack Lemmon received numerous awards for arguably his greatest ever role."@en

  • ""Mamet's savage look at a group of slimy small-time real estate salesmen. ... Harsh story examines the underhanded, eventually criminal activities of the salesmen as they compete to outdo each other in hustling dubious properties to phone clients. Key to their sales efforts are quality 'leads,' which have a lot to do with whether they satisfy their hard-driving bosses and are able to keep their jobs. Most in danger of getting the ax is, unsurprisingly, the oldest employee, Shelley Levene, who begs, pleads and deals for better leads than the worthless ones he's been dealt. By rote, he makes his time-worn sales pitches, both over the phone and in person but in the high-powered sales world personified by Blake, the terrorist from the head office, there's clearly no place for a dinosaur like Shelley. Also in jeopardy and strategizing in different ways are George and Dave. Kevin Spacey plays the by-the-books office manager while Jonathan Pryce plays a cowering customer. But in contrast to all these drones is Ricky Roma, a hotshot salesman who seems to know every trick in the book and how to play them. Unlike the others, Roma is nattily dressed, tan, and comes off like a guy who's going to use the system, not be used by it"--Variety review by Todd McCarthy, August 31, 1992."
