Global health governance crisis, institutions, and political economy

An outstanding group of scholars are brought together in this volume to investigate the sharp contrast between the acute and multi-dimensional scale of the challenges to global health governance, and the presently inchoate, contradictory and ineffective responses to them. The global governance of health is contested: the relationship between the increasing number of international organizations with a specific health remit or control over matters with obvious health impacts is characterized not by collaboration or consistency of purpose, but rather by competition between contending worldviews of health contained in national security, biomedical and economic liberalization policy frames. In contrast to the sometimes isolated disciplinary approaches to global health, this multi-disciplinary and wide-ranging book uncovers the critical political economy dynamics in the contemporary governance of global health.
