"Seduced by the dashing Lieutenant Montraville, who persuades her to move to America with him, the fifteen-year-old Charlotte Temple leaves her adoring parents and makes the treacherous sea voyage to New York. "The unusually rich "Contexts" section seeks to provide readers with an overview of Charlotte Temple's overlapping British and American backgrounds. Materials are thematically organized into four parts--"Women in Early America: Intellect, Education, Sexuality," "Reading in Early America," "The American Sentimental," and "Selections from Rowson's Writings"--Which include works from Rowson's time to our own. Fourteen illustrations from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are reproduced to further enrich the reading experience, among them portraits of Susanna Haswell and William Rowson as youths, a London advertisement for the novel, and covers from the 1845 and 1867 editions."

"The sentimental novels of the early national period were considered a danger to society and were criticized for the corrupting influence they had on the minds of their mostly young and female audience. They told tales of vice and intrigue that purported to be "based on fact" and also advocated the need for better female education that would prepare young women against sweet-talking seducers. Extremely popular in America after the Revolution and throughout the nineteenth century, Charlotte Temple and The Coquette were two of the most successful novels of the period. Reprinted here in."@en
"Originally published in England (1791) and in the U.S. (1794). Based on experiences of the author's family, it was "For the perusal of the young and thoughtful of the fair sex." By 1933 it had gone through 161 editions in the U.S. A sequel, Charlotte's Daughter (1828), is usually published as Lucy Temple."
"An instant best-seller when it was published in America 1794, the sentimental novel Charlotte Temple speaks to the popularity of the genre--and the public thirst for fiction--from the early national period and beyond. This Norton Critical Edition is based on the first American edition; the author's original spellings have been maintained. The novel is accompanied by a comprehensive introduction, detailed explanatory annotations, and a note on the text."
"A Chronology of Susanna Rowson's life and works and a Selected Bibliography are also included. --Book Jacket."
"Tell the stories of Charlotte Temple, a young English girl who is abandoned by her husband after going to America, and her orphaned daughter Lucy."
"At age 15, Charlotte is a pupil in Mme Du Pont's school for young ladies. An army officer, Montraville, aided by his libertine friend Belcour and Mlle La Rue, a teacher at the school, seduces the girl, who elopes with him from England to New York. There he deserts her to marry an heiress, Julia Franklin. Charlotte gives birth to a daughter, Lucy, but, abandoned even by the heartless Mlle La Rue, now married to Colonel Crayton, she dies in poverty. Her father later adopts Lucy, but refuses to punish the repentant Montraville. The latter in a duel kills his former friend Belcour, who had further misled Charlotte, and returns to Julia."
