Governor's correspondence: general

Open All Close All

http://schema.org/description

  • "Incoming and outgoing correspondence of the governor and his military and private secretaries, spanning several gubernatorial administrations. Much of the correspondence is concerned with routine departmental and administrative matters. There are some references to military affairs, although most matters of that nature are documented in "Military Correspondence" (Series 49). Topics include appointments, removals from office, arrests, pardons, parole cases, requisitions, claims, and land survey contracts. The outgoing letterbooks concern routine matters too but they also embrace some of the topics that are separately cataloged as Governors' Correspondence: Special (Series 34). Two volumes are present from the Territorial era which contain correspondence on arms quotas for territorial militia, military roads, improvement of the Fox and Wisconsin rivers, contingent fund expenses, Indian lands, and other topics. Also included is a critical essay on the letters by Joseph Schafer, superintendent of the State Historical Society."
