"Using popular songs of the day and excerpts from the diary kept by a German soldier, this film captures not only the events of WWII, but also the chronicle of a life in the army in words and pictures. Gerhard M., amateur photographer, took his camera everywhere his unit was posted on the Eastern Front. He took both snapshots and carefully composed portraits, and subjects included his fellow soldiers, Soviet prisoners, civilian victims of the war, the Germany army's expropriation of livestock and other supplies, and a temporary leave spent happily in Berlin with his fiancée. After the war, he settled in East Berlin, and in 1952, his scrapbook of personal souvenirs became legal evidence for a Soviet court; he was executed by firing squad."
