  • "The papers consist of business papers, letters, a diary, and a hand drawn map of San Francisco bay. The business papers, accounts and letters from Woods to McVean, document McVean's management of the crops and livestock of Arguello Park in 1854-55. Letters, mostly by McVean to his parents and sister Francis describe his voyage via Panama to California and his work there. The letters in 1855 focus on bank and business failures in California, such as the Adams & Company Express and Bank, owned by Woods. McVean's diary also chronicles his trip to California but it mostly consists of work calenders documenting his ranch employment."
