While the adults career toward confrontation and tragedy, Ofelia becomes immersed in the magical world in the surrounding forest. In an underground lair she encounters a strange faun - Pan - who tells her she is the long-lost princess they have been waiting for and sets her a series of tasks. This underground realm is so fully and elegantly realised, it might be the adaptation of a classic novel. Yet the source is del Toro's own capacious imagination. It is an audacious achievement: using the language of children's film, but it is absolutely not a film for children. Pan's Labyrinth gets it perfectly right, slipping back and forth between Ofelia's other-worldly adventures and the brutality of real life so that they reflect, and lend resonance to, each other.
