The making of a social disease tuberculosis in nineteenth-century France

In France, tuberculosis was perceived as a social problem as early as the 1830s and 1840s, well before bacteriology ratified the notion of contagion and identified the tubercle bacillus. Eventually, by 1900, a national crusade of doctors, hygienists, philanthropists, and public officials arose to fight the spread of the disease. This dissertation argues that the timing and contours of what was called "the War on Tuberculosis" were determined by social anxieties and imperatives more than by strictly medical developments or changes in the incidence of the disease. Furthermore, behind the facade of national unity and scientific objectivity, a bitter political struggle was waged over the social meaning of tuberculosis and the control of medical knowledge.
