  • "The census memorandum on the population of Charlottesville, Va., was furnished Thomas Jefferson in 1818. In 1939, C.L. Worthington, proprietor of the Green Bookman, obtained the memorandum and offered it to the State Library for $25.00. When the librarian, Randolph Church, refused to purchase, Worthington burned the memorandum and sent the ashes to Church, who forwarded them to John Cook Wyllie of the University of Virginia."
