""The Business of the Eye " Title on cover: Johns."
"This volume presents the life and works of Jasper Johns (b. 1930). Johns is an American contemporary artist who works primarily in painting and printmaking. His work is often described as a Neo-Dadaist, as opposed to Pop Art, even though his subject matter often includes images and objects from popular culture. Using wax-based paint, plaster relief, collage, and even commonplace objects such as brooms and rulers in his paintings, Johns achieves a sculptural texture in his work. He is arguably most known for his flag paintings of the 1950s, though other themes, including targets, numbers, letters, and maps, are also famously recurrent. Johns is widely considered one of the most important American artists of the 20th century. The author has included a chronological summary of Johns' life and work, covering his cultural and historical importance, with some 100 color illustrations with explanatory captions."
