Freedom of religion in China

It illustrates the Communist Party's preoccupation with the effect of free religious practice and external ideas on its own tight political control. Through the use of official documents, records of state and provincial meetings and case studies of harassment, intimidation and arrests of those who practice religion outside the official religious structure, the text not only unmasks China's claim of permitting the free expression of religious belief but records the Party's commitment to atheism. A series of appendices graphically illustrate the detailed restraints on places of workship, religious education, clerical independence, and the reproduction and distribution of religious publications. Until such time as the co-optation of believers fail to further the interests of the Chinese Communist Party, Buddhists, Muslims, Catholics, Protestants and Daoists will be tolerated; they will also be severely restrained.
