Questa interpretazione, già avanzata a suo tempo dai più acuti osservatori di area antifascista (Angelo Tasca, Pietro Nenni, Enzo Sereni, ecc.), per qualche aspetto si è riverberata nella storiografìa, a muovere dagli anni Settanta, sulla scia della distinzione introdotta da Renzo De Felice fra "fascismo-movimento" e "fascismo-regime". Questa ricerca intende problematizzare tali giudizi indagando la visione mitica della politica, evidente nelle avanguardie politiche e culturali che costeggiarono il primo fascismo (futurismo, sindacalismo rivoluzionario, arditismo), e il processo di nazionalizzazione delle masse di cui il fascismo si fece promotore fin dai suoi primi passi. Cosa si intende per "visione mitica della politica", e perché questa si presenta come un atteggiamento di opposizione al liberalismo e al socialismo? Il fascismo era consapevole di perseguire una strategia politica deliberatamente autoritaria, volta ad affossare lo Stato liberale? Rispondere a tali interrogativi è la chiave per sciogliere un nodo di carattere più generale: fino a che punto il fascismo diciannovista può essere visto come un movimento contraddittorio, protestatario, addirittura "libertario", e non piuttosto come una cultura politica in cui sono già presenti in nuce alcuni aspetti della successiva esperienza totalitaria?
