An evaluation of Dr. Bruce Ewing's Discipleship for leadership program at Salem Church in Staten Island, New York

The purpose of this research project is to determine the effectiveness of Discipleship for Leadership as a tool for training the members of Salem Church for leadership and ministry. The program was developed by Bruce Ewing, the former pastor of Fellowship Bible Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While serving as a pastor, he developed this program in the hopes it would help the members of his church develop into the kind of leaders God wanted them to be. According to students who participated and professors who observed, the course worked well at Ewing's church. The question then became, would it work in other churches? After being tried and evaluated in several churches, the answer was repeatedly, yes. The question for this study was specific: "Will Bruce Ewing's Discipleship for Leadership be an effective training tool for the leaders of Salem Church in Staten Island, New York?" The research again answered that question in the affirmative. The program was effective, and this was validated by the quantitative and qualitative evaluations given to the students. The outcome of this program is that the students grew in their biblical understanding of what a disciple is. They also grew in possessing an eternal perspective, in having a servant's spirit, in modeling the Savior and in their commitment to live a life of obedience. This is extremely important for two reasons. First, it is important because the responsibility of every Christian to be a disciple who makes disciples (Matt 28:19-20). This class highlights the life of a true disciple. Second, it is the responsibility of pastors to "equip the saints for the work of the ministry" (Eph 4:12). As pastor for Salem Church, this is my calling and with Discipleship for Leadership I now have a strong tool to help in this labor.
