The Newfoundland coastal zone and its influence on community development = La zone contiere de Terre-Neuve et son influence sur le developpement des collectivities
The Coastal zones of the world have been identified by UNESCO as a priority for the synthesis of knowledge, for the training of specialists, and for research leading to better ways in which coastal regions can be used and occupied by men. The four papers given at the UNESCO's Annual Meeting are included in this document. The topics covered include descriptions of the variety of eco-systems in coastal zones around the world and the importance of recording the traditional knowledge of individuals living in coastal regions, as well as the effect of fishing, ocean waste disposal, and energy development on coastal populations. Also addressed are social concerns such as isolation, demanding physical conditions, fluctuating natural resources, poverty of coastal communities, and legislative inadequacies that have been reactive and development-oriented rather than proactive and resource management-oriented. Discussed also are the positive effects of high technology in these areas.
