Dadurch, dass er sie explizit "nicht für die Jugend" geschrieben hat, obwohl sie als Jugenderzählung konzipiert war, gewinnt "Pole Poppenspäler" seinen Reiz: Auf der einen Seite steht die Liebe von Paul Paulsen und Lisei, auf der anderen Seite die Kluft zwischen Bürgertum und Kunst - einer Problematik, der sich auch Thomas Mann besonders widmete. Theodor Storm (1817-1888) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller und Lyriker. Sein literarisches Werk beginnt er zunächst in der Nachfolge der Spätromantiker mit Stimmungsnovellen, entwickelt dann aber mehr handlungsbetonte Erzählungen, in denen das Individuum seine seelische Heimat in der Einheit von Landschaft, Geschichte und Gemeinschaft erlebt. Sein Spätwerk ist von grosser und reifer Erzählkunst geprägt."
