"Aretha Franklin war 1967 eigentlich überreif für ein erstes Meisterwerk, doch es fehlte noch die richtige Vision. Als Tochter eines Pfarrers hatte sie bereits als Kind in Detroit die grosse Gospel-Schulung bekommen. Mehrere Alben bei Columbia Records hatten ihr seit 1960 zwar einige Rhythm & Blues-Hits und kritische Anerkennung beschert - aber nicht den grossen Durchbruch. -- Mit ihrem Wechsel zu Atlantic Records kam sie unter die Fittiche des legendären Produzenten Jerry Wexler, der sie im Januar 1967 südwärts in die Provinz schickte - zu einer Gruppe von weissen Studio Studiomusikern in Alabama. Rassische Auseinandersetzungen waren vorprogrammiert, aber die Begegnung endete mit einem kreativen Sieg. -- Vorbild für singende Frauen: In Muscle Shoals und später in New York begann mit <<I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)>> und dem Mega-Hit <<Respect>> eine Soul- und Pop-Karriere, die unzählige R&B-Sängerinnen von Patti Labelle über Whitney Houston bis zu Alecia Keys beeinflusste und wesentlich zum wachsenden Selbstbewusstsein und Stolz im weiblichen schwarzen Amerika beitrug.
