Early Virginia families : Pyrtle, Davis, Turner, Martin

John Pirtle (Pyrtle) and his brother, Henry, immigrated to America from France or Germany before the Revolutionary War and settled first in Virginia or Maryland. He served in the Revoltionary War as a corporal in the 8th Virginia regiment. He wrote his will in Patrick County, Virginia, in 1793 listing four daughters and three sons. His great grandson, Jas. A. Pyrtle, was born in 1837 in Henry County, Virginia, the son of Barton Pyrtle (1795-1869) and Lucinda Mary Pyrtle. He married Elizabeth Sarah Davis in 1860. They had eight children. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The family moved to Giffithsville, Lincoln County, West Virginia, in 1868, and to Plum Creek, Nebraska, in 1875. He and his only son died of smallpox three weeks after reaching Nebraska. Descendants listed lived in Nebraska and elsewhere.
