"The series of conflicts between Māori and Government soldiers over almost 30 years between 1845 and 1872 are known as New Zealand Wars. They produced many heroes, both Pākehā and Māori, think of Von Tempsky and Rewi Maniapoto, Governor Grey and Te Kooti, and many stories, of bravery and heroism, and of cruelty and folly. The wars continue to have an impact on the shape of the country today. Suggested level: intermediate, junior secondary."
