"Luis Bunuel's controversial film classic was denounced by the Vatican after its release in 1961. After leaving behind her life as a nun, the young Viridiana is confronted with the depravity and poverty of the world outside the convents walls. Beware of charity appears to be the message that permeates Bunuel's satire, but a deeper theme is the hypocrisy of the Catholic church and Spanish society in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. In one famous scene Bunuel arranged the dwarves and lepers that Viridiana invites into her home to reflect Leonardo Da Vinci's painting The Last Supper. This was the first flm that Bunuel had made in his native Spain in thirty years, and it is a stinging indictment of the insulated and undemocratic social conditions that existed in Franco's Spain at the time. The film was shot in Spain with a script that the Spanish censors had approved in advance. By the time the authorities realized the subversive nature of the film, the negative and original materials had already been removed to France. Further complicating the issue for the Spanish authorities was the fact that the film was nominated to represent Spain at Cannes where it won the Palm D'Or. In the aftermath of the success of the film at Cannes, the head of the Spanish film bureau was dismissed, and the film was banned from Spanish cinemas."@en
