Reliable and religious : U.S. Army chaplains and the War of 1812

From the Back Cover: Army chaplains in the War of 1812 were a diverse group of dedicated clergymen. They marched with the troops, fought Indians and the British, and ministered to their troops. Some chaplains showed Christian compassion to British prisoners of war. Many of the chaplains served far from home for extended periods of time. Other chaplains served in their hometowns for only a few days or a couple of weeks. Religiously, the chaplains represented every Protestant denomination in America in the early nineteenth century. They were a committed group of clergy dedicated to freedom from what they perceived as British oppression. Some chaplains were regular army, but most were militia chaplains. Some of these military clergymen were injured, wounded, or died while on military orders. Their story of providing religious strength and support to the fledgling American Army is here told for the first time.
