  • "Philip Green is commissioned to write a series of articles on anti-semitism for a progressive magazine. There must be a new angle, and to secure this he decides to pose as a Jew. It is then that he learns the meaning of intolerance, the petty insults and indignities which have to be suffered. He is in love with Kathy and tells her what he has done, but distrust and misunderstanding continually threaten to overrule their feelings for each other. A childhood friend, Dave Goldman, returns from overseas, and he, too, is exposed to the racial prejudice of Kathy and her friends. Even Green's young schoolboy son is made to suffer. We learn through restricted hotels, a doctor, a secretary, that every branch of American communal or business activity, contains a gentleman's agreement that Jews shall be excluded. Finally Dave persuades Kathy to overcome her doubts about the whole situation, and she and Green are reunited."

  • "Magazine writer Schuyler 'Phil' Green, a widower who has just arrived with his mother and young son in New York, is assigned the task of writing an expose of anti-Semitism. As he searches for a new angle on the topic, he decides to pass as a Jew for several months, which causes no end of trouble for his ailing mother and young son. It also puts his new society girlfriend on the spot, since despite all her intellectual convictions, she cannot quite shake the vicious prejudices of her particular group. In the 40s, Hollywood began exploring serious social problems in an upfront manner, and while a trifle too earnest for some people, this film puts the 'gentleman's agreement' among gentiles to discriminate against Jews directly in the spotlight."@en

  • "A journalist poses as a Jew in this well mounted and acted drama on the theme of anti-semitism which was closely supervised by the producer Darryl Zanuck. At the time of its release it was held up as a demonstration that 'message' films are not necessarily box office poison for it was a commercial as well as an artistic success (winning several 1947 Academy Awards including best picture). If the controversial aspects are not so apparent today and the message seems over-explicated it, nonetheless, does succeed without being too unsettling in implicating otherwise "nice people" in patterns of bigotry."@en
