A night at the Opera

The move of the Marx Brothers from Paramount to Metro and the supervision of Irving Thalberg resulted in bigger budgets, more lavish production numbers and space for the romantic leads. There was a weakening of the social satire evident in the softening of Harpo from 'natural-man to child-man' to quote Gerald Mast. Nevertheless the script, by satirists Kaufman and Ryskind, provided the brothers with some of their best comic material: the opening in the restaurant between Groucho and Dumont, the Groucho-Chico encounter over a contract, the ship's cabin scene, some bed-snatching business and the hilariously incongrous finale in the opera house, are amongst the Marx Brother's most memorable scenes.
