"Durante la seconda guerra mondiale una bambina di cique anni, Paulette, rimane orfana. Vagando per la campagna incontra Michel, figlio di contadini, che la porta a casa sua. Among the survivors is 5 year old Paulette, who has just seen her parents shot dead, along with her small dog. Paulette hurries after her dead dog when someone throws it into the river, and manages to recover it. She is caressing the dead puppy when a young boy named Michel, about five years her senior, appears and makes friends with her. He takes her back with him to his farm home, where he persuades his parents to allow the young orphan to stay with them. Michel helps Paulette to cope with her grief by helping her to bury her dead dog in the grounds of a run-down water mill. Paulette is still sad, unhappy that her dog is alone.
