  • "La storia principale è quella di John Harmon che, mentre si trova all'estero, apprende di aver ereditato una grossa somma dal padre imprenditore, ma a condizione che sposi Bella Wilfer, una donna che lui non conosce neppure. Sulla nave che lo riporta in patria, confida a un ufficiale di bordo la sua intenzione di as sumere una falsa identità per conoscere la futura sposa. L'ufficiale lo attira in una capanna sul Tamigi e tenta di assassinarlo per derubarlo. Rimane ucciso, il suo cadavere ripescato dal fiume viene identificato con quello di Harmon. Harmon ne approfitta per realizzare il suo piano. Si fa assumere con il nome di Rokesmith come segretario del signor Boffin, ex sovrintendente del padre, che ha ricevuto tutta l'eredità del vecchio Harmon (a causa della notizia della presunta morte di John). Rokesmith incontra Bella, figlia adottiva di Boffin. E' una ragazza frivola ma molto attraente, e Harmon- Rokesmith se ne innamora. I Boffin scoprono la vera identità di Rokespith, decidono di mettere alla prova Bella: fingendo durezza di cuore e avarizia, scacciano il giovane. Bella apre gli occhi: capisce quanto male possano fare le ricchezze, e quanto ricco di meriti sia il suo corteggiatore. Lo raggiunge e lo sposa. La cupa atmosfera del romanzo, dominata da colpe e delitti commessi per denaro, è accentuata dalla vicenda che si intreccia con quella di Harmon fin dall'inizio. Quella del giovane avvocato Eugene Wrayburn innamorato di Lizzy Hexam, figlia di un ripescatore di relitti e di cadaveri lungo il Tamigi. Anche Eugene è vittima di un tentativo di assassinio, a opera di un suo rivale in amore. E' Lizzy che lo salva, ferito quasi mortalmente. Poco dopo i due si sposano, e vanno a vivere nella casa di Harmon e Bella."
