"Lang's final film before fleeing Germany for the US (without his wife Thea Von Harbou, who co-scripted the film and subsequently joined the Nazi party) reprises the character of the master criminal he had created for his famous two-part 'Dr Mabuse, der Spieler'. The film picks up where the original left off, with Mabuse confined to an insane asylum where he uses his hypnotic powers over others, and the asylum director as the agent of those powers, to carry out his master plan to destroy the state. While engineering a series of criminal and chaotic acts that rocks Berlin, the asylum director manages to lead a double life, retaining his position at the asylum. Made during the Nazi party's rise to power, the film captures a political atmosphere of dread, nihilism and individual impotence and although Lang later characterized it as an explicit anti-Nazi parable, its meanings are more general and its points of comparison not exact. Nevertheless, it was banned and nearly destroyed by the Nazis."
