Lawrence worked for the British Museum digging among the Hittite ruins in Mesopotamia (now Iraq). The Oxford graduate had spent years in the desert developing an intimate knowledge of the nomadic Bedouin tribes that roamed the region. As a British officer during World War I, Lawrence organized and led an insurgency of Arab tribal irregulars and spent two years attacking Turkish strongholds, severing communications and destroying the railways of the Ottoman empire. Partially based on T.E. Lawrence's memoirs, the film Lawrence of Arabia attempts to combine the parallel threads of T.E. Lawrence's inner psychology with the insurgency he led against the Turks. The historical events depicted in this film led to the creation of the modern nation states of the Middle East. Major T.E.
