Work attitudes and labor market experience : evidence from the national longitudinal surveys

A study was done to examine the influence of several work attitudes on a number of facets of subsequent labor market experience, as well as the influence of labor market experience on the work attitudes. Based on interview data on about 20,000 respondents from the National Longitudinal Surveys representative national samples of men 14 to 24 and 45 to 59, and women 14 to 24 and 30 to 44, analysis revealed consistent and systematic effects of a number of work attitudes on the respondents' subsequent success in the world of work over the next two to five years. Additionally, the data provided considerable support for the hypothesis that success and failure in work roles help shape the work attitudes people come to hold. Confidence in these findings is strengthened by the fact that the observed relationships were independent of individual differences in skills, abilities, and demographic distribution, and were obtained on the basis of longitudinal as well as cross-sectional data.
