"History, politics, rhetoric, and journalism: these disparate subjects collide and at times combine in the speeches of great orators. This series brings mainstream political history to life through the medium of oratory and public address, presenting excerpts of more than thirty-five historically and rhetorically significant speeches. Jody Powell explains the historical context, provides biographical background on the speakers, explicates techniques, and places each speech within the larger narrative of American public discourse."
"The fifth in a six part series tracing the history of visually recorded American oratory with commentary and film clips which place each speech in historical perspective. This program begins with a fiery speech by Malcolm X reminiscent of the polarization of American political life in the 1960s. Nelson Rockefeller's condemnation of 1968 Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater as a political extremist; Goldwater's rebuttal of the charges; and Ronald Reagan's stump speech in support of Goldwater follow. Robert Kennedy's moving eulogy for Martin Luther King, Jr., concludes the program."
