John Eliot Gardiner is best known in musical circles for his interest in ancient music. He founded both the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists, and has recently formed a new orchestra, the Orchestre révolutionaire et romantique, to perform the music of Beethoven and Berlioz on original instruments. This two-part program looks at the 'Revolution' and 'Romantic' in the name of his new orchestra. In 'Revolution' the origins of some of Beethoven's music in the propaganda tunes of the French Revolution are explored, especially in the fifth Symphony ; and in 'Romance' John Eliot Gardiner is shown in rehearsal with his orchestra for Romeo and Juliet by Berlioz.
