  • "SiCKO is more like a controlled howl of protest than a documentary. Toning down the rhetoric of past efforts--no CEOs, congressmen, or celebrities were accosted in the making of this film--Michael Moore's latest provocation is just as heartfelt, if not more heartbreaking. As he clarifies from the outset, his subject isn't the 45 million Americans without insurance, but those whose coverage has failed to meet their needs. He starts by speaking with patients who've been denied life-saving procedures, like chemotherapy, for the most spurious of reasons. Then he travels to Canada, England, and France to see if socialized medicine is as inefficient as U.S. politicians like to claim--especially those who receive funding from pharmaceutical companies. Moore finds quality care available to all, regardless as to income. He concludes with a stunt that made headlines when he assembles a group of 9/11 rescue workers suffering from a variety of afflictions. When Moore is informed that detainees at Guantánamo Bay--technically American soil--qualify for universal coverage, he and his companions travel to Cuba to get in on that action. It's a typically grandstanding move on Moore's part. And it proves remarkably effective when these altruistic individuals, who've either been denied treatment or forced to pay outrageous costs for their medication, experience a dramatically different system. Nine years in the making, SiCKO makes a persuasive case that it's time for America to catch up with the rest of the world."
  • "Writer/producer Michael Moore interviews Americans who have been denied treatment by health care insurance companies -- companies who sacrifice essential health services in order to maximize profits. The consequences for the individual subscribers range from bankruptcy to the unnecessary deaths of loved ones. Moore then looks at universal free health care systems in Canada, France, Britain, and Cuba, debunking all the fears (lower quality of care, poorer compensation for doctors, big-government bureaucracy) that have been used to dissuade Americans from establishing such a system here. The roots of those health care systems are explored, and our failure to establish free health here care is traced to a) President Richard Nixon's deceptive support of the then-emerging HMOs pursuing huge profits and b) subsequent pressures for Congress to sacrifice sound health care in favor of corporate profit. A group of Americans who became ill from volunteering at 911 Ground Zero, but were refused health coverage for their illnesses, are ferried by Moore to Cuba, where they receive the top-rate, free care one would hope they'd get here at home. In his interviews, historical reportage, and typical sarcastic wit, Moore soundly condemns American health insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies, as well as the politicians who have been paid millions to do their bidding. He makes the case that there is something wrong with Americans that we cannot learn from the successes of other countries in providing better quality-of-health than we enjoy in the USA."

  • "Michael Moore returns with this hilariously scathing indictment of America's failing health system. Combining powerul personal testimonies with shocking statistics, Moore pulls the curtain back on the greader HMO's, durg companies and congressman who keep us ill. Travelling to Canada, England, France and Cuba - where free universal health care is the norm - he forces the question: Why can't this be the U.S.?"@en
  • ""The words "health care" and "comedy" aren't usually found in the same sentence, but in award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore's SiCKO, they go together hand in (rubber) glove. Opening with profiles of several ordinary Americans whose lives have been disrupted, shattered, and - in some cases - ended by health care catastrophe, SiCKO makes clear that the dysfunctional system doesn't only affect the 47 million uninsured citizens - millions of others who dutifully pay their premiums often get strangled by bureaucratic red tape as well." -- Container."

  • "Michael Moore investigates healthcare in the US, the only country in the Western world without free universal healthcare. This brilliant documentary is both hilarious, terrifying and frequently tragic as we hear first-hand accounts not just from those without healthcare but from the majority of Americans who do have healthcare. The corruption in the health insurance industry is exposed by people who work within it and those who have been let down by it. Footage of US presidents from Nixon to Bush are shown and their role in shaping healthcare in the US today is explained. Moore visits Canada to review socialised healthcare there and he spends a long time in the UK at Hammersmith Hospital meeting patients and GPs and talking to Tony Benn about the origins of the NHS. He also looks at the French health service including S.O.S. medicin, the emergency home-visiting service. Moore discovers that the only place the US provides free medical care is at Guantanamo Bay where Iraqi prisoners are held, so he takes a boat-load of patients suffering under the US system to visit the centre - ironically 3 of them are 9-11 medical workers. They are not allowed access so visit nearby Cuba, the Havana Hospital, where they receive more health assistance for free than they have had in the US for thousands of dollars."

  • "After exploring the predominance of violence in American culture in Bowling for Columbine and taking a critical look at the September 11th attacks in Fahrenheit 9/11, activist filmmaker Michael Moore turns his attentions toward the topic of health care in the United States in this documentary that weighs the plight of the uninsured (and the insured who must deal with abuse from insurance companies) against the record-breaking profits of the pharmaceutical industry. Moore interviews a number of people who have been left broke by medical bills even though they were fully insured, and explains how the corporate drive for profits has left numerous people in financial and medical disarray. After hearing that detainees in Guantanamo have access to free health care, Moore assembles a group of World Trade Center rescue workers to travel to Cuba in order to get the medical help they need for ailments they incurred in 2001. Moore's film debuted at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival."@en
