  • "This adaptation of the age-old fairy tale combines traditional Disney animation with computer-generated effects. In 18th-century France, a selfish prince rebuffs an old woman begging for alms. Revealing herself to be an enchantress, she transforms him into a loathesome beast and gives him a rose, admonishing him that he will be restored to human form only if he can be loved before the flower loses all its petals. In a small village, Belle, the beautiful daughter of Maurice, an eccentric inventor scorned by all, is pursued by the boastful hunter Gaston, but prefers reading to romance. On his way to a fair, Maurice loses his way in the forest, arrives at the Beast's dreary castle and is imprisoned by the monster. Discovering her father's whereabouts, Belle promises to stay in his place and is given a spirited welcome by the servants, animated household objects that stage a spectacular dinner-show for her enjoyment. Belle finds the chamber where the wilting rose is secreted away and after an outburst by the Beast, leaves the palace only to be attacked by wolves. The Beast rescues Belle and nurses her back to health, prompting her love. Gaston and the villagers storm the castle but are repelled by the loyal servants. The Beast defeats Gaston and seems at the point of death when he is miraculously changed into a handsome prince. He and Belle are reunited; the castle returns to its former glory and the retainers regain their human shape. Songs include: "Belle," "Gaston," "Be our guest," "Something there," "Beauty and the Beast," and "The Mob Song." (Does not circulate)."@en
  • "The field of psychology has long explored the dark side of human behavior. However, psychologists have increasingly focused on the importance of optimism and perceived control. The freedom to make choices is often considered the bedrock of happiness. Dr. Detweiler-Bedell explores perceptions of control and the role of emotionality in day-to-day living. Upon leaving this talk, you will have a better understanding of the artistry of experience - that is, how to conquer the beast, sustain (just enough) control, and find beauty."@en
