"John Rambo, un veterano del Vietnam, ritorna negli USA e scopre che nulla della sua vita è come prima. Si mette così in viaggio per andare a trovare un suo compagno di guerra, ma si scontra con lo sceriffo di una piccola città. Questi lo arresta ed in carcere verrà maltrattato dalle guardie, cosa che riporta nella memoria di Rambo terribili ricordi legati alla guerra in Vietnam e alle torture lì subìte. Istintivamente si ribella, riesce a liberarsi e fugge sulle montagne.
