500 nations stories of the North American Indian experience

An eight-part series which looks back at the life in North America before the arrival of Europeans, then follows the epic struggles of Indian Nations as the continent is reshaped by contact. Part 1 looks at the ancient civilizations of the Maya, Mississippian and Anasazi. Part 2 chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of empires in Mexico. Part 3 focuses on the impact of Spanish expansion and exploration in the Caribbean and American Southeast. Part 4 looks at Indian nations facing English exploration and colonization along the Eastern seaboard of the Northern American continent. Part 5 examines the effects of trade and expansion into the interior of North America, culminating with the American revolution. Part 6 in the aftermath of the American revolution, the front lines of the invasion moved west to the Indian nations of the Ohio Valley. Demoralised by punishing post-war treaties, hunger and missionary pressure, Indian communities were eroding. Part 7 looks at the twin gold rushes in California and Colorado which brought hordes of settlers into the Western Territories, where such Native American leaders as Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull and the Kiowa chief Satanta organized futile resistance. Part 8 examines the Indian resistance of the late 19th century, including Chief Joseph on the Nez Percé, the Apache leader Cochise and Geronimo, who surrenders and is imprisoned into the 20th century. The government-mandated suppression of Native American culture culminates in the massacre of Wounded Knee.·$
