The Viennese born actress-singer Lotte Lenya was regarded in her lifetime as the leading interpreter of the songs of her husband, composer Kurt Weill. Active in Germany, where Weill had great success with his "Die Dreigroschenoper" and "Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny", Weill and Lenya fled the Nazi regime in 1933, eventually coming to the United States. On this program Lenya sings "Alabama-Song" from "Mahagonny" ; "Bilbao-Song" and "Surabaya Johnny" from "Happy End" and other songs, all of which have text by Bert Brecht.
