The Canterville Ghost

This is best described as a story of super-natural hanky-panky; a parody of stories of the supernatural; a study of the contrasts between England and America and is probably funnier today than in its time. There was no great moral or literary lesson to be had from the story, but only a sense that if Oscar Wilde has sat down to improvise a ghost story, that was it.

  • "Oscar Wilde's wit and meaning is at its best in this ghost story, considered by many the best ever written. Wilde lends himself to narration because of his quick wit and delivery. Wilde presents a traditional English ghost that Americans refuse to accept, but the finally work together to end the controversy. One of the great short stories of all time."@en

  • "The Canterville ghost has been scaring tenants of Canterville manor to death for generations. But the ghost was not prepared to deal with the new American tenants, who only asked that the ghost keep it quiet."@en
  • "An amusing chronicle of the tribulations of the Ghost of Canterville Chase when its ancestral halls become the home of Hiram Otis, the American Minister to the Court of St. James. Deftly contrasting the conventional gothic ghost story with the pragmatism of the modern world, Wilde creates a satire of American materialism, a lampoon of traditional British values, and an amusing twist on the traditional gothic horror tale."
