"Zurigo 1904. Carl Gustav Jung ha ventinove anni, è sposato, in attesa di una figlia e affascinato dalle teorie di Sigmund Freud. Nell'ospedale Burgholzli in cui esercita la professione di psichiatra viene portata una giovane paziente, Sabina Spielrein. Jung decide di applicare le teorie freudiane sul caso di questa diciottenne che si scoprirà aver vissuto un'infanzia in cui le violenze subite dal padre hanno condizionato la visione della sessualità. Nel frattempo Freud, che vede in Jung il suo potenziale successore, gli manda come paziente lo psichiatra Otto Gross, tossicodipendente e dichiaratamente amorale.
