  • "Father Nazario, a poor Mexican priest, struggles to live literally according to the teachings of Christ."
  • "The story opens in front of an impoverished Mexican inn, the year is 1900. A decaying sign displays the name of the establishment, Inn of the Heroes. Busy women, street vendors, a trio of prostitutes, and a few beggars are lounging in front of the inn. Father Nazario (Francisco Rabal) announces that someone has entered his rooms and stolen his clothes along with the few coins that he had saved from the last church collection. The only clothing he has left is the cassock he is wearing. Nazario does not wish to press charges with the police, but he believes that the thief was probably Camilla, a loose woman from the neighborhood. The prostitute Andara discovers that her cousin Camilla was indeed involved in the burglary of Nazario's quarters. She gets into a vicious fight with Camilla and is badly wounded. Hoping to protect Andara, Father Nazario hides her in his rooms, but she is quickly found by the police. Having discovered a prostitute in his rooms the Catholic authorities decide to defrock Nazario. Left with nothing, he decides to wander the countryside as an itinerant priest. Director Luis Bunuel's portrait of Nazario is a powerful indictment of humanity's superficial embrace of the spiritual. Again and again the quixotic Nazario insists on practicing a pure form of Christianity, celebrating honesty, poverty and forgiveness, yet he is consistently reviled by both high and low society."
