  • "Illustrated and annotated manuscript of The Book of Kells, one of the most splendid, beautifully illustrated books of the Middle Ages. In his famous commentary, Sullivan traces the historical background and origins of the manuscript and places it as a ninth century manuscript. Popular legend, however, says it was produced by St. Columbus and made by the monks of the monastery of Kells about the middle of the sixth century. It was in the possession of the monastery at Kells at the time of its dissolution under Henry VIII on November 18, 1539. It was later acquired by Bishop Ussher, who was employed by King James I to collect antiquities relating to the church. Five years after Ussher's death in 1661, it was transferred to Trinity College, Dublin, where it still resides. -- Publisher description"
  • "The Book of Kells is one of those documents which have fascinated generations of artists in every branch of artistic activity. Any modern artist or craftsman may study this book with the greatest pleasure and profit. Yet he may be quite unable to say just what it is about the Book of Kells which is the secret of its compelling interest. The Celtic and Early Medieval manuscripts, with their special significance and the social conditions under which they were produced, seem very remote from the life of to-day, and the Book of Kells is, in addition, so different in its presentation from contemporary calligraphy or indeed from any other kind of lettering, that a point of contact is difficult to establish. - Foreword."
