"This dissertation, the Schauss/Shouse Family in North Carolina , is a family history/genealogy in book form, tracing the family of Johann Adam Schauss of Albisheim, Pfalz. Johann Adam Schauss was born about 1704 and died in 1770. His ancestry in Germany is traced back to 1620, and his descendants in America are traced forward to 1900. Johann Adam Schauss was a miller and millwright by trade who came to America in 1736. He is one of two documented people with the surname Schauss who immigrated to America before the American Revolution. He is considered the progenitor of the Schauss families in British North America. It is this fact that makes him and his family an ideal subject for such a study. Johann Adam's ten children settled in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Kentucky. the North Carolina branch, the subject of this study, became true Southerners, some of whom were slave owners. In 1865, when emancipated, some of the African Americans chose to take the anglicized form of the family name, Shouse, as their surname. This dissertation also includes a family history/genealogy study of those nongenealogically related African American lines." . . . .
