  • "A sentinel bottom-trawl survey was performed in NAFO division 4T from 2003 to 2010. This survey uses a stratified-random sampling design along with standardized fishing protocols. Four commercial vessels participated each year. Formal statistical tests revealed significant differences in relative fishing efficiency between vessels. These were used to adjust catch levels with respect to a reference vessel. Informal comparisons of each vessel's length frequency distributions of fish caught were made. Overall, length frequencies are presented as well as spatial distributions of catches for each year. Abundance indices are presented for commercial groundfish species (Atlantic cod, white hake and various flatfish). Atlantic cod, American plaice, winter flounder and yellowtail flounder show significant decreases in their abundance since 2003. For the same period, white hake show non-significant decreases. Few tendencies are detectable for Atlantic herring and Atlantic halibut since the majority of the years of the survey had equivalent levels of catches. Various issues related to the formal modeling and testing are discussed and recommendations are made for future analyses."
  • "Following the collapse of several groundfish stocks in the Northwest Atlantic, sentinel surveys were introduced to the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence (sGSL) in 1994 as a way of obtaining complementary data to the September groundfish survey which has been conducted since 1971. Sentinel surveys were also intended to involve fish harvesters in the scientific assessment process and have incorporated certain elements of the contemporary fishing fleet, namely the timing of survey, the various types of fishing gears used by the fleet, as well as being performed by active commercial groundfish fish harvester and their vessels. The main objective of these surveys has been to gather information on stock composition and distribution, and to construct indices from which to infer trends in abundance. This report provides summary results from the 2010 sGSL sentinel bottom-trawl survey conducted between August 1st and August 21st, which are compared to the 2003 to 2009 sentinel surveys. Catch indices, length frequency distributions by species, as well as their spatial distributions are also presented.--Document."
