To rid a terror-stricken village of corruption, wily masterless samurai Sanjuro turns a range war between two evil clans to his own advantage. Remade twice, by Sergio Leone and Walter Hill, this exhilarating genre-twister remains one of the most influential and entertaining films of all time."

  • "In the 1860's, a wandering samurai exploits two gangs who are fighting for control of a village. Toshiro Mifune is superb as the samurai-with-no-name who teaches both warring factions a lesson in this tounge-in-cheek take on the samuri genre. Later remade as 'A Fistful of Dollars' by Sergio Leone, the film epitomises the traffic of ideas, traditions and techniques between East and West."
  • "In the year 1860, Toshiro Mifune, a wandering samurai-for-hire, with cynical integrity, wanders into a windswept frontier town inhabited by two equally bad warring clans. Mifune emerges as a one-eyed king, in an apocalypse that is exhilarating, funny, and horrifying."

  • "Superb tongue-in-cheek samurai picture, the plot of which resembles a Western; Mifune is perfection as samurai up for hire in a town with two warring factions, both of whom he teaches a well-deserved lesson. The inspiration for A Fistful of Dollars."
  • "Two warring clans vying for power bid for the services of a wandering samurai-for-hire."

  • "In a flea bitten, dusty Japanese town, a ronin (unemployed samurai) finds himself in the middle of a feud between two warring mafia's. On one side of town a local silk merchant is building a small army, while on the other, a sake merchant is hiring anybody who can carry a sword. The two merchants engage in a bidding war to employ the services of the itinerant samurai, but he has his own plans. Disgusted by both sides, the samurai, (Mifune) instigates a war between the two factions and with great pleasure sits in the town's bell tower watching them cut each other to pieces. After freeing the daughter of a local villager from bondage, he leaves the town in search of further exploits. Yojimbo was the inspiration for several Sergio Leone films including the Clint Eastwood vehicle, A Fistful of Dollars which was made a few years later. Kurosawa portrays 19th century Japan as a society where corruption and calamity are so commonplace that the distinction between bandits and samurai have become blurred. Kurosawa was one of the few Japanese directors who was allowed to work with relative creative freedom, his early films were consistently commercially successful, as was the case with Yojimbo. Kurosawa's films along with his contemporaries Ozu, Mizoguchi, and Ichikawa raised Japanese cinema onto the world stage in the period immediately after World War II."@en

  • "In nineteenth-century Japan, the emergence of a middle class and the decline of the Tokugawa Dynasty eliminated the need for the samurai warrior. This comedic and anarchistic tale is the story of a samurai without a master to serve. Sanjuro Kawabatake wanders into a town in the midst of civil war. On one side stands the silk merchant, Fujiwara; on the other side is the sake merchant, Shimura. Both are equally evil. Sanjuro sees their strife as an opportunity to enrich himself as well as secure immediate food and lodging. He is hired by Fujiwara as a "yojimbo," or bodyguard, but devises a devious plan of his own. He pretends to hire himself out to Shimura and secretly kills some of his men. The samurai is caught, brutally beaten and imprisoned. He escapes and witnesses a momentous battle betwen the two factions. When the warring is over, Sanjuro surveys the field of corpses and displays a sense of accomplishment at finally bringing peace to the village. This film influenced western filmmaking and was re-made in as A Fistful of dollars."
