Elizabeth Bayley Seton was born in New York City in 1774 and seemed destined for a tranquil life. But after a series of tragedies, including the death of her husband and the loss of the family fortune, Elizabeth turned to the Catholic faith and founded organizations that championed education for women of all faiths. In 1975, she was canonized as America's first native-born Saint.
