Constant craving the science of addiction

This video explains about addiction to drugs, including alcohol and nicotine and how addiction occurs. Alcohol has caused more damage than all the illicit drugs combined. People get into using drugs, because of the feeling they get when they get high. The feeling of pleasure that addicts get when using drugs is what leads to addiction. In the case of addiction, the drug targets the part of the brain that controls the reward centres and gives a feeling of pleasure by causing an extra dose of endorphines which is what gives the addict a rush, and it is this feeling that causes addiction in some people. Over time drug use damages the brain, the endorphines are reduced so the addict doesn't get pleasure from normal activities and only from drugs. But over a long period of time, it is the craving that causes addicts to continue to use drugs even though they get little pleasure from using them. This video also talks about scientist doing trials to develop a vaccine to cocaine and also one for nicotine, so addicts would not get a high from using and therefore no reward from using drugs.

  • "Explores many of the myths that surround drugs, from nicotine to heroin, alcohol to cocaine, and shows how powerful new treatments can help addicts find a cure."
  • "This program explores the science behind drug addiction. The program combines computer graphics, medical imaging and human stories of addicts to explain the processes of addiction to substances such as nicotine, alcohol, heroin and cocaine."@en
  • "Chemical addiction is now being treated like a disease, and a cure appears to be on the horizon. Approaching heroin, cocaine, alcohol, and nicotine addiction from a biological perspective, this program features new research into the meso-limbic reward pathway and efforts to implement treatments based on that research using Zyban, Naltrexone implants, and even a cocaine vaccine. Footage of the first human trial of the cocaine vaccine at Yale University is included."@en

  • "Investigates the new research that has changed recent understanding of drug addiction for heroin, cocaine, alcohol and nicotine, and looks at the newly evolving ways of countering it. For most of the 20th century, drug taking was seen as a moral problem : a weakness of will leading inevitably to addiction. Now, scientists know exactly which neurotransmitters of the brain are being triggered. This, combined with scanning experiments and remarkable animal work, is leading to the conclusion that one particular pathway to the brain is the key to all addictions. Discusses treatments based on using Zyban, Naltrexone implants and cocaine vaccine. Footage of the first human trial of the cocaine vaccine at Yale University is included."@en

  • ""This film investigates the cutting-edge research that has changed recent understanding of drug addiction and the best way of dealing with it. Filmed mainly in the U.S. where most top research is done, it also covers work in the U.K., combining spectacular computer graphics and medical imaging of the brain with compelling human stories. It explodes many of the myths that surround all drugs, from nicotine to heroin, alcohol to cocaine, and shows how powerful new treatments can help addicts find a cure. Most futuristic of all, the film includes unique footage of the first human trial of the cocaine vaccine. Could we envision a world where adolescents were vaccinated against cocaine and nicotine so that they were never at risk? -- DVD container."@en
