Cold War Britain, 1945-1964 new perspectives

Scholarly debate on the Cold War has, up until now, been mainly dominated by the examination of Soviet-American confrontation, with the role of other states seen as largely peripheral or principally as extensions of policies of the super powers whom they orbited. This book aims to deepen our understanding of Britain's role by both revisiting commonly accepted central issues and revealing under-explored topics and themes during the early Cold War years. Additionally, it examines Britain's response in a wide context: against the backdrop of nineteenth and early-twentieth century Anglo-Russian antagonism, the domestic political and economic scene, and the UK's particular position in the world after the end of the Second World War.

  • "Britain and the Cold War, 1945-1964 offers new perspectives on ways in which Britain fought the Cold War, and illuminates key areas of the policy formulation process. It argues that in many ways Britain and the United States perceived and handled the threat posed by the Communist bloc in similar terms: nevertheless, Britain's continuing global commitments, post-war economic problems and somestic considerations obliged her on occasion to tackle the threat rather differently."
