Birth rates for U.S. teenagers reach historic lows for all age and ethnic groups

Though the teen birth rate in the United States is one of the highest among industrialized countries, it has been on a long-term decline since the late 1950s. Using preliminary data from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) for 2010, this briefing paper reviews trends and variations in teen childbearing in the United States. Statistics are provided on: the teen birth rate from 1940 to 2010; birth rate by different teen age groups; number of births for women aged 15-19, from 1940 to 2010; teen birth rate by race and ethnic background of mother; and state variations.
