http://schema.org/description

  • "The beautiful Unterlinden Museum in Colmar is housed in a thirteenth- century monastery. The Madonna in a Bower of Roses by the fifteenth-century painter Martin Schongauer is kept in the Dominican church. The museum also holds eleven small panels and the complete graphic work of Schongauer. It is assumed that Schongauer learnt to work with a burin in the workshop where his father worked precious metals. After all, the rise of the engraving is closely connected with the flourishing art of metalwork in the fifteenth century. Schongauer's engravings and paintings display stylistic parallels with the work of Rogier van der Weyden. It is possible that he travelled to the Low Countries, where he could have come into contact with the work of Van der Weyden and the Flemish Primitives. This comprehensive and lavishly illustrated book presents the works of Schongauer in detail. Martin Schongauer was the most important European printmaker of his day. He was a major source of inspiration for Albrecht Dürer."
