""The following case study examines the economic system of Auroville, a universal township founded in honor of Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo and based on his spiritual teachings. Located in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Auroville aims to embody human unity through diversity and become the epicenter of a global shift of consciousness en route to an evolution of the human species. The founder of Auroville, referred to as The Mother, enumerated a set of principles and guidelines for an Aurovilian economy including no private ownership of property and the non circulation of money within the communitys boundaries. The present study looks at these principles and analyzes their practical application within an emerging alternative economic system. The study argues that the Auroville Economic System, AVES, is a hybrid system whose sustainability does not lie solely within these principles but also lies within the AVESs capacity to adapt these principles to conventional economic systems including communism, capitalism and collectivism.
