"L'obiettivo prioritario di questo studio è un'analisi d'insieme delle strategie messe in atto da copisti, committenti, lettori, per confezionare, possedere e trasmettere l'opera più viva, appassionante e amata della letteratura medievale in volgare in Italia, il Decameron di Giovanni Boccaccio. Il volume si apre con una rassegna delle testimonianze librarie e documentarie che attestano una proto-diffusione dell'opera, collocabile negli anni in cui l'autore era ancora vivente; in seguito il percorso della ricerca si addentra nella selva oscura della tradizione posteriore alla morte del Boccaccio, divisa in due fasi ben distinte: il discrimine è posto al 1434, anno che segna una svolta decisiva nella vita politica fiorentina in seguito alla salita al potere di Cosimo il Vecchio. I 60 manoscritti che formano il corpus dei testimoni decameroniani per i secoli XIV e XV vengono esaminati in un'ottica paleografica, codicologica e, se necessario, testuale, con l'obiettivo di rispondere alle domande più pressanti poste da ciascuno di essi: il quando, il dove, il chi, il come e il perché (o il per chi). Ne risulta un quadro complesso e variopinto, al centro del quale si pone, solidamente, la città di Firenze, con frequenti aperture all'area veneto-padana, senza contare le fascinose e ricorrenti suggestioni che spingono lo sguardo verso Napoli, la città delle nostalgie e del ritorno impossibile, vagheggiato dal Boccaccio fino al termine della vita."
