Dopo aver assunto la morfina al fine di calmare una forte allergia, Bulgakov aveva infatti potuto sperimentare sulla propria pelle la tragica dipendenza dal farmaco, arrivando a farsi sino a due punture al giorno. Il racconto servì dunque allo scrittore anche per esorcizzare definitivamente quella penosa esperienza.
